Veterans Day ceremony 2011 at the Van Cortlandt Park Memorial Grove

Today (November 13, 2011) I attended the Veterans Day ceremony at the Van Cortlandt Park Memorial Grove. It was very nice.

Some of the notable people and/or politicians who were in attendance and seen in my photos are:

Herb Barrett, the president of the VCP Memorial Grove Restoration Group
Don Tannen, of the Memorial Grove Restoration Group
Councilman G. Oliver Koppell
State Senator Jeff Klein
Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz
Lloyd Ultan, Bronx Borough Historian
Cantor Daniel Pincus, Congregation Shaarei Shalom

The guys marching with the flags (color guard) were from Manhattan College, Fordham University, and SUNY Maritime. Boy Scout Troop 240 (a 90-year old troop) and a Girl Scout troop also marched.

Of note, many of the veterans present (and seem to be involved with the restoration of the Memorial Grove, as well as organizing and running this ceremony) are members of the Jewish War Veterans organization.

The turn out was not very large. I wish many more people would attend, including “younger” people. It is very important to honor and remember our veterans. Please enjoy the photos.
